The election of a Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) must kick start a new era for the organization if it is to play a leading role in the fight against high and volatile food prices and growing hunger, said Oxfam today.

Following the dramatic food price increases in 2007–08, an estimated 150 million people joined the ranks of those who go hungry.

People across the world are changing what they eat because of the rising cost of food according to a new global survey released today as part of the GROW campaign. Agriculture Ministers from the G20 countries are meeting in France next week and will discuss the global food price crisis.

There are some problems so big and so entrenched it is easy to believe they will never be solved. Hunger is one of these problems. Yet there is no problem so great it cannot be solved.

In response to the Food and Agriculture Organization's report, "Climate Change, Water and Food Security", Oxfam's international climate adviser Tim Gore said:

A broken food system and environmental crises are now reversing decades of progress against hunger according to new Oxfam analysis. Tomorrow, Oxfam launches a new global campaign to ensure everyone has enough to eat always.

Global food prices will more than double within 20 years, as a new age of crisis forces the collapse of our global food system.

Oxfam’s senior gender advisor Ines Smyth said:
